Sustain our Nation (SoN) is a competition for young designers that seeks to encourage innovation to address the issues of Ageing population, Health, Finance, Crime, Energy & Climate change, via the creation of social enterprises through design.
We decided not to limit ourselves focusing on any of the themes provided by the competition guidelines and took an open approach to learn from the community what their needs were. We scoped several areas in Glasgow, and decided to work with Wyndford, where we were lucky to meet wonderful people committed to actively develop their community wellbeing.
We took a design-led research approach and developed innovative tools to gather the community’s voice in a playful way. We branded ourselves as GetGo Glasgow, and undertook informal interviews and co-design workshops with both, community members and stakeholders.
Three project proposals were co-developed with the community, of which two passed through to the regional finals. Eventually one of them won the regional and national finals, which provided the community with a budget of 20000 pounds to set up the social enterprise Green Gorillaz.
